01

Armored Fiber Built for Faster Broadband Deployment

Broadband providers need fiber infrastructure that can be installed efficiently and remain protected across long outdoor routes, rural communities and congested urban environments.

Iron Photon combines high-performance singlemode fiber with compact stainless-steel spiral armor. The integrated construction helps protect critical fiber from crushing, impact, handling and other physical risks while supporting direct-burial, small-OD trenching and narrow-trench applications and conventional pathway installations where approved.

02

Reducing the Cost of Broadband Construction

Excavation, conduit, labor, permitting, restoration and installation equipment can represent a substantial portion of the cost of deploying underground broadband infrastructure.

For qualifying projects, Iron Photon direct-burial armored fiber may eliminate the need to place the cable inside a separate conduit. Removing that additional installation step can help reduce:

  • Conduit material costs
  • Conduit installation labor
  • The number of installation steps
  • Pathway space requirements
  • Handling and pulling time
  • Excavation and restoration requirements
  • Overall construction time
  • Time required to place the network into service

Whether conduit can be eliminated depends on the selected cable construction, installation environment, engineering design, applicable codes and permitting authority.

03

Compact Cable for Small OD Trenching

Iron Photon’s compact armored construction is well suited for qualifying small-OD trenching and narrow-trench applications.

Compared with conventional trench construction, an approved narrow-trench installation can require a smaller cut and may allow contractors to use more compact equipment. This can help reduce the construction footprint, limit surface disruption and accelerate installation along roadways, sidewalks, campuses and developed corridors.

Potential project benefits include:

  • Smaller excavation footprint
  • Less material removed from the pathway
  • Reduced surface-restoration requirements
  • More compact installation equipment
  • Less disruption to traffic and surrounding property
  • Faster cable placement
  • Improved access to constrained urban routes
  • Reduced labor and equipment time
  • Faster network activation and customer connection

Trench dimensions, burial depth, backfill, protection, marking and restoration must follow the approved engineering plan and the requirements of the applicable roadway, utility and permitting authorities.

04

06

Rural Broadband Deployment

Rural broadband projects can involve long routes, difficult terrain, limited conduit availability and considerable distances between communities, cabinets and network facilities.

Iron Photon singlemode armored fiber provides the optical reach required for these networks with integrated stainless steel protection. For qualifying installations, direct burial can simplify the pathway by allowing the approved cable to be placed without first installing a separate conduit.

This can help rural broadband contractors:

  • Reduce the materials transported to remote locations
  • Limit the number of construction steps
  • Install protected fiber across long routes
  • Reduce pathway size and complexity
  • Accelerate connections to underserved communities
  • Improve protection in areas exposed to construction or environmental risks
07

Urban and Municipal Broadband

Urban broadband construction must work around existing utilities, roadways, sidewalks, buildings and congested underground infrastructure.

Iron Photon’s compact outside diameter can help contractors route armored fiber through limited pathways or use qualifying narrow-trench installation methods where approved. The smaller construction footprint can be especially valuable when conventional trenching would create significant traffic, restoration or property disruption.

08

Protection Where the Network Is Most Vulnerable

Broadband cable can be exposed to damage during installation and throughout its service life. Excavation, utility work, construction equipment, pulling stress, crushing and accidental impact can interrupt service across an entire network segment.

Iron Photon’s stainless steel spiral armor adds physical protection around the optical fibers while maintaining a compact and flexible cable construction.

The armor can help protect fiber in:

  • Underground broadband routes
  • Handholes and cabinets
  • Building entrances
  • Utility corridors
  • Roadway and transportation pathways
  • High-traffic installation areas
  • Industrial and municipal environments
  • Locations exposed to future construction activity
09

Installer Advantage

Iron Photon helps installers combine the optical cable and protective armor into one compact construction.

Installers can benefit from:

  • Fewer installation components
  • Reduced dependence on separate conduit for qualifying applications
  • Easier cable handling and routing
  • Smaller pathway requirements
  • Improved conduit utilization
  • Flexible stainless steel spiral armor
  • Added protection during pulling and placement
  • Custom footage markings and identification
  • Factory-terminated options that reduce field labor
  • Cable configurations matched to the installation method
  • Faster deployment through constrained pathways
  • A simplified transition from cable placement to testing and activation
10

Broadband Provider Advantage

For broadband providers, reducing construction time can accelerate customer connections and shorten the time between project funding, network construction and revenue-producing service.

Broadband network owners can benefit from:

  • Faster infrastructure deployment
  • Lower installed cost on qualifying projects
  • Reduced construction and restoration requirements
  • Added protection for critical fiber routes
  • More efficient use of existing pathways
  • Long-distance singlemode performance
  • Scalable fiber counts for future growth
  • Reduced exposure to physical cable damage
  • Fewer service interruptions caused by damaged pathways
  • Custom cable solutions for rural and urban networks
  • A durable foundation for long-term broadband expansion
11

Direct Burial Without Compromising Protection

Where the cable construction and installation design are approved for direct burial, Iron Photon can provide a protected optical pathway without requiring a separate conduit.

This does not mean that every project should eliminate conduit. Conduit may still be required for code compliance, future cable replacement, shared pathways, roadway crossings or project-specific protection. Iron Photon helps the project team evaluate whether direct burial, conduit installation, small-OD trenching or another method provides the best balance of protection, speed and total installed cost.

12

Engineered Around the Broadband Route

Iron Photon evaluates the complete deployment before recommending a cable construction, including:

  • Required transmission distance
  • Fiber count and future capacity
  • Route and installation method
  • Soil and environmental conditions
  • Pathway and conduit availability
  • Required burial depth
  • Roadway and permitting requirements
  • Cable-pulling conditions
  • Building-entry requirements
  • Jacket and fire-rating requirements
  • Termination and connector configuration
  • Cabinets, handholes and network equipment
  • Testing and documentation requirements
13

Factory Terminated Tested and Documented

Qualifying Iron Photon broadband assemblies can be manufactured to specified lengths, fiber counts, connector configurations, breakout arrangements and labeling requirements.

Factory termination and testing can reduce field labor, improve deployment consistency and help contractors move more quickly from cable placement to network commissioning.

Test documentation can be provided according to the selected product and project requirements.
