Purpose-Built Tools for Stainless-Steel Spiral Armor

All products

Iron Photon armor preparation tools support the controlled preparation of stainless-steel armored fiber. The purpose-built tools help technicians establish a cut point and unspiral or separate the armor before accessing the protected cable construction.

Two tool configurations cover smaller armor sizes from 0.5 mm through 3.2 mm and larger armored-tube outside diameters greater than 3.2 mm. The correct tool must be selected around the actual Iron Photon cable and armor diameter.

Purpose-Built Tools for Stainless-Steel Spiral Armor

Stainless-steel spiral armor protects the optical fibers throughout installation and service, but it must be prepared correctly when a cable is terminated or spliced. General-purpose cutting tools can create inconsistent preparation points or place unnecessary stress near the fiber package.

The Iron Photon accessory platform includes dedicated tooling for controlled armor preparation across different cable diameters. This allows the installer to select a tool designed around the actual spiral-armor size instead of relying on an improvised removal method.

Armor Preparation Tools

The armor tools are designed to help the technician control and separate the stainless-steel spiral at the intended preparation point. The correct tool must be selected for the cable and armor outside diameter, and technicians must follow the approved preparation procedure for the specific construction.

  • IP-NFT-032 - Stainless-steel spiral armor preparation tooling for creating the cut point; supplied as a five-holder set for armor sizes from 0.5 mm through 3.2 mm
  • IP-NFT-60 - Adjustable spiral armor preparation tool for armored-tube outside diameters greater than 3.2 mm; tightened to fit the selected armor layer
  • Purpose-built support for controlled access to the protected fiber construction
  • Tool selection based on the actual armor diameter and cable design
  • Preparation method intended to reduce uncontrolled deformation of the spiral armor
03

Armor Preparation Workflow

The tool category supports four essential stages of armored-cable preparation:

  • Prepare the outer jacket and strength members using the approved cable procedure
  • Select the correct armor tool and establish a controlled preparation point
  • Separate the stainless-steel spiral armor without damaging the protected fiber package
  • Secure the prepared armor and continue with the approved termination procedure for the selected cable

Only trained technicians should prepare armored cable. The approved cable datasheet, tool instructions and applicable safety requirements govern each installation.

Installer Advantage

Armored-fiber installation becomes more efficient when technicians have tools designed around the cable construction. Dedicated armor preparation tooling helps establish a repeatable starting point for controlled unspiraling and removal of the stainless-steel armor.

Installers benefit from:

  • Tool sizes matched to the selected armor outside diameter
  • More controlled preparation of stainless-steel spiral armor
  • Clear transition from the intact armored cable to the prepared termination area
  • Tool options for smaller and larger armor outside diameters
  • A coordinated preparation-tool set for armored-fiber projects
07

End-User Advantage

Correct armor-preparation practices help preserve the protection and optical performance designed into an armored-fiber system. Purpose-built tools support consistent workmanship during installation, expansion and repair.

End users benefit from:

  • Better protection of the cable and fibers during preparation
  • Repeatable termination and repair practices
  • Faster restoration when trained teams have the proper equipment
  • Preparation tools selected around the installed Iron Photon cable system
  • A practical service platform for long-term network maintenance
